Alkaline Rocks and Carbonatites of the World

Setup during HiTech AlkCarb: an online database of alkaline rock and carbonatite occurrences

Sengeri Hill

stripes

Occurrence number:
163-00-037
Country:
Tanzania
Location:
Longitude: 33.18, Latitude: -8.97
Carbonatite:
Yes

This occurrence comprises two main carbonatite dykes and numerous smaller ones. The main dykes trend northeast-southwest and consist of dolomitic carbonatite with accessory pyrite, magnetite, barite and pyrochlore with interstitial and vein quartz. Fenites marginal to the dykes are principally of alkali feldspar, but some aegirine has been reported. Bell and Blenkinsop (1987) give Sr and Nd isotope data for a sample of carbonatite.

Age:
Post-Karoo, pre-Cretaceous. Probably similar in age to Panda Hill (No. 163-00-038), which is just to the southeast (see Bell and Blenkinsop, 1987).
