20 km east-southeast of Meru is Ngurdoto which is a volcano rising to 1853 m with a 3.5 km diameter, 360 m deep crater. To the south is the poorly exposed Matuffa Crater-Great Domberg complex. These volcanic centres are built of phonolitic breccias and tuffs. The structures and ages are little known because of poor exposure, and because they are partially buried by lahars that emanated from Meru.
