Among the extensive basalt lavas on the rift valley floor in the Kitete area nephelinite lavas are recorded (Pickering, 1965), and they are also found several kilometres further east (Dawson and Pickering, 1964).

Age: 
Two basalts from the Kitete Escarpment K-Ar dated by MacIntyre et al. (1974) gave 0.8±0.4 and 1.2±0.06 Ma.
