This volcanic field contains more than 300 centres spread over an area of about 2500 km2. It includes many plugs standing on a plain of Nubian Sandstone, while lavas also cover a considerable area, particularly in the west. There are no pyroclastic rocks. The rocks comprise olivine, plagioclase, titanaugite, opaques and a little secondary carbonate. The chemistry indicates they are tephrites, basanites and phonotephrites.

Age:
K-Ar determinations indicate ages in the range 69-70 Ma (Barth and Meinhold, 1979).
