Jebel Taraq is a hill of 3 km diameter comprising quartz syenites which form two arcuate rings about a central core. The outer ring consists of a coarse syenite of perhtite, less than 5% interstitial quartz, augite, opaques, hornblende, riebeckite and accessories. Fibrous, radiating riebeckite, brown biotite and minor calcite are present in some samples (J.R. Vail pers. comm., 2000). 12 km to the east of Tarag an intrusion of similar size is referred to as Jebel Tarag East by Vail (J.R. Vail pers. comm., 2000).
