Three small areas of limestone covering 100 to 300 m2 and forming low hillocks 10 to 25 m high are situated north and south of the harbour at Kibuye, on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu, and on the nearby island of Mbarara. They are built essentially of crystals of dolomite 2 to 4 cm across. They have been interpreted as carbonatites but Lavreau et al. (1989) have demonstrated by means of selected trace elements and Sr and O isotopic determinations that they are probably not carbonatites.
