The Sorug alkaline intrusive complex cuts Precambrian marbles and gabbroic rocks of lower Palaeozoic age. It includes peralkaline syenites, nepheline-bearing syenites and plagioclase-bearing nepheline syenites; nepheline syenite pegmatites are abundant. There are small cross-cutting granosyenite bodies. The nepheline syenites are composed of nepheline (9-35%), alkali feldspar (40-79%), aegirine-augite (5-17%), biotite (1-18%), amphibole, plagioclase, garnet and not very plentiful Fe-Ti oxide minerals. Mineral compositions are given by Kovalenko and Popolitov (1970).
