Karaganskii is a 6 km2 intrusion composed of nepheline and alkaline syenites which are commonly altered with extensive replacement by sodalite, cancrinite and liebenerite. Nepheline comprises about 30% of the rocks and accessories include zircon, garnet, apatite, monazite, anatase, tantalo-niobates and magnetite. There are dykes and veins of syenite aplite, albitite, peralkaline syenite pegmatite and lamprophyre.

Economic:
There is a sulphide mineralisation of copper, lead, zinc, arsenic and molybdenum; concentrations of Nb, Ta and rare earth minerals are associated with the alkaline syenites.
