On Sullivan Island and nearby smaller islands in the Ottawa River, and on the adjacent west bank of the river, a complex of carbonatites and fenites is exposed. Most of the complex consists of fenitized clastic metasediments involving zones of intense hematization and fractures filled with alkali amphiboles, pyroxenes and feldspar. Some fractures contain lenses of aegirine syenite pegmatite. Silico-carbonatite forms dykes choked with fenite fragments (Lumbers, 1982, Photo 11) and comprises calcite, apatite, sphene, sodic pyroxene, amphibole, phlogopite, perthite, zircon and accessories.
Age:
Preliminary dating of zircons from carbonatite indicated a minimum age of 1050 Ma (J. Satterly, in Lumbers, 1982, p. 38).
